West Dallas


West Dallas has been a hub for collaborative efforts in the Dallas area. However, the legacy of neglect for so many years prior to these efforts resulted in a significant deterioration of the neighborhood, from which recovery has been difficult.  These statistics reflect the current state:

  • 35% of the households live in poverty
  • 46% of households have an annual income below $25,000
  • Average household size is 3.72
  • 31% of households are female-headed, 17.1% with children
  • Grandparents live in 24.5% of the households and in 48.3% of households with grandparents, the grandparents are the primary caregivers for the children
  • 50% of persons 25 or older are unemployed
  • 34.3% of adults over 25 do not have a high school diploma or GED
  • 65% do not graduate in four years
  • There is a 2.2% college graduate rate
  • 67% of female-headed households live in poverty
  • 25% of all births are to teenage parents

West Dallas Public Schools

Within the West Dallas area (zip code 75212) there are ten Dallas ISD schools:  seven elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and one science magnet middle school.  Approximately 5,700 students attend these schools, 200 of which are students from all areas of Dallas that attend the magnet.
